My First Short Film - Silence
On November 21, 2018, I uploaded my first ever short film about social anxiety, while in the thick of social anxiety. The moment it went live, I started second-guessing myself, questioning whether anyone would watch it, and whether it was “good enough” to be shared.
I believe this happens in the creative field often, appraising our own art and work critically, and potentially creating a lot before concluding with a satisfactory piece.
Six years on, the film has amassed almost 80,000 views, with an overwhelming number of comments, with an underlying theme of ‘I’m not alone’ through seeing another person openly be vulnerable about it.
I had the goal of de-stigmatising mental health and building connection in lived experiences, however, I’d never anticipated such outcomes.
As a digital content creator who values storytelling, creating films is a tedious process, with long stages of production and creative blocks, while simultaneously finding joy and fulfilment in envisioning the final product, and the growth along the journey.
Moreover, I fulfilled a long-held dream of creating films with others through being an extra on a film that hits close to home. The joy of connecting with my community while acting on a professional film set was unforgettable. I unlocked a side of me hidden away out of shame.
The takeaway is this. Our storytelling and art, whatever the format, can positively impact someone’s life in ways unforeseen to us. Whether a silent viewer/follower, or someone who comments, don’t underestimate the power of sharing your story.
